Carmen DeLeon cuts out toxic relationships in her debut single “Volverás”
As Carmen DeLeon sat in her bedroom wearing a baseball cap and loose T-shirt combo, her vibrant energy radiated across our Zoom call, allowing a familiar “just chilling with a friend” vibe that carried us into the perfect headspace to receive her music. The bubbly Venezuelan-born starlet showed us childhood photos of herself and chuckled, remembering how her mother put her in flamenco and tap dance classes when she was a kid. From the get-go, her eagerness to share her thoughts poured out of her mouth in the same charismatic and candid way that shines through in her song.
DeLeon's debut single “Volverás,” released through Capitol Records this past August, is a sassy breakup track paired with an infectious reggaetón beat. Its catchy sound is no surprise, as the track was produced by renowned Puerto Rican producer Tainy who has been involved in some of the biggest hits in reggaetón and trap. DeLeon expressed that the theme for “Volverás” actually stemmed from a different kind of heartbreak:the friendship kind. She shared that she was bullied for numerous years, and came to realize through toxic friendships that “sometimes, because you don’t wanna be alone, you let [toxic people] stay in your life.” In a sassy and empowered afterthought to that experience, “Volverás” encourages the listener to love themself enough to weed the toxic people away–in whatever capacity that may be.
DeLeon, no longer tolerating fake energy of any kind, sings in a fierce and playful tone: "Que cayeras en tu propia trampa / Que bebieras de tu propio vino / Y no es que yo buscara venganza, ese es el destino / Yo te lo digo / Que tú volverás" Ever since being a fan favorite on The Voice in Spain, the singer has experienced her fair share of artificial affection that she simply does not want in her life anymore. “You’re worth more than you think. Sometimes, people by your side make you feel less than, when you’re not.” In essence, her debut single carries emotional introspection paired with a brazen, filter-free tone–a combination that always reverberates in both DeLeon's music and presence.
When asked about her future goals in the music industry, Carmen DeLeon is leading her career with ambition and empowerment: “It’s super sad because not a lot of female artists in the Latin industry are as big as male artists, in my opinion”–a change the bilingual 19 year old Latina is ready to tackle. “She can do anything and she’s Latin,” DeLeon echoed, reiterating how she hopes to be perceived. From a shy kid with stage fright encouraged by her father to pursue her passion in music, the pop star in the making has come a long way and she’s only getting started.
“I want people to know what’s in my brain. My brain is like a freaking theme park,” she giggled as the Zoom call came to an end. At core, Carmen DeLeon wants to share her stories, all intricacies and peculiarities included. All I can say is I'm excited to hear them. “Volverás” is streaming now on all platforms and the music video is available below.
